Game Design DocumentLeah Byrne –B00107444 ‘Escape Route’

§  Story
The name of the game is ‘Escape Route’, about a character who found himself inside a maze structure. The character races against time to find their way out, this can take multiple tries. The backstory of the game is around the idea of a adventurer who has gotten lost along their way and has found their way to this maze and it is another task in their journey, the users job is to help the character find their way out and continue their travels.

§  Character
The user will have one or two characters to chose from in the loading screen, a man and a woman. The user will always see the gameplay through a first-person view looking directly on front of them, at all times. The characters will ideally be designed to look like adventurers on a journey to collect the gem at the centre of the maze. The user will hopefully find a liking towards a certain character and generate a favourite, this will improve the user connectivity with the game and the overall gameplay.

§  Environment/Level
The environment will be a darker setting, as the walls will be built high to give the illusion that the character is trapped within the maze. The walls will be made to look like they’re made of stone, giving off a darker exterior and sets the tone of the game. A gloomy effect will make the user feel more trapped and worried at the thought of not making it out of the maze.

§  Gameplay
The game play will be simple, with good design and well thought out. I don’t want to overdo it with graphics as it’ll take away from creating a solid and working game. Game play is all about the way a user interacts with a game, in relation to audio and visuals. I hope to incorporation audio into my game when gems are collected or if you hit a dead end. I aim to have the mechanics of the game done best and the graphics will follow. The user is the most important in the production of this game and I want to make a good game for a user to enjoy.

§  Genre
The genre of this game is a puzzle/adventure style game, with the gems to collect and various possible outcomes inside of the maze, the game will be simple yet an addictive game. Game genre is important as it helps you as a developer to cater towards a certain target audience, be able to get a better idea of what they enjoy as users and the different aspects they enjoy within a game that can help you improve your own game.

§  Art Description
I plan to design the layout of the game, regarding the materials that will be used in the environment. The walls will be made from a stone looking material within Unity, the ground will be a mixture of grass and dirt looking terrain, so when the character runs over the ground it will make a thumbing/hard hitting sound as the soil would be hard. The sky will be a grey-ish blue colour, to give off the impression that it’s dusk or the evening time, again to give the user that feeling of time pressure as they’re losing daylight.

§  Sound
The main audio used in tis game will come from the movements of the character, running across the ground, jumping creating a louder thud on the ground or collecting the gems placed around the maze. Further audio will be used when the user unlocks a further section of the maze or if they complete the tasks and successfully exit the maze in time. I would like to have an intro theme song or jingle to accompany the title screen, which would match the end credits if the user was to successfully complete the game. This use of audio would improve the gameplay as the user would get a better overall experience with the game.

§  User Interface and Controls
The controls of the game will be simple, the arrow keys on a desktop computer will be the way in which the user would navigate their way through the maze. These interfaces can be used on both pc and Mac computers or any device with arrow keys.
Arrow Up - Run Forwards       Arrow Down - Step Backwards
Arrow Left - Move Left         Arrow Right - Move Right
Spacebar - Jump          Mouse - Pointer to Collect Gems

§  Target Audience
The target audience this game is aimed at is going to be over 12 years old. The game won’t have any explicit content or sensitive topics unsuitable for younger viewers, it will be a family friendly game that any age group can enjoy.
